Are you ready to Pay it Forward this Mandela Day?

July2022

.

In 2009, when the United Nations General Assembly recognized Nelson Mandela's birthday, 18 July, as “Nelson Mandela International Day”, Madiba urged people around the world to honour him by assisting their communities.  Every year, South Africans participate in various ways to honour Madiba by donating 67 minutes of their time to community service on 18 July to give back to humanity.

We at City Sightseeing will be doing our bit by offering an innovative giveaway that allows you to pay it forward in true “Madiba style”.  Nominate the local hero that you feel could do with a day out on our famous Red Open Top Bus in the City of Gold.

Hop on our Johannesburg Green Tour from our main departure location in Rosebank and tour the beautiful areas around Zoo Lake, stopping at all key attractions such as Zoo Lake, the Johannesburg Zoo, and the Military Museum before arriving at Constitution Hill. Change to the Red City Tour here and continue your tour across the inner city, stopping at the James Hall Museum of Transport, Gold Reef City Theme Park, and the Apartheid Museum before returning to Constitution Hill via Newtown and, eventually, Rosebank. You'll quickly see why Joburg is not only Africa's economic playground but also one of the world's most forested cities.  Click on the link here for our route map or visit our website for more information on our tours in Jozi.

If your hero is awarded a day with City Sightseeing, we recommend they visit these iconic sites dedicated to Mandela in Jozi.

Hop off at Constitution Hill, where Nelson Mandela was first detained and tried, at stop number 5. There, Winnie Mandela and other well-known activists like Mahatma Gandhi were also imprisoned. The jail and its surroundings are today a stronghold for liberty and the constitution as well as a location for concerts and excursions.

At stop number 14, you’ll find the Apartheid Museum, where you can discover all about the history of Apartheid and the battles non-white South Africans fought to achieve freedom, equality, and democracy, is a must-see. With interactive exhibits and galleries that invite you to make a commitment against prejudice. It's an informative tour that encourages one to support and stand firm against racism, with interactive displays and galleries that inspire you to make a pledge against discrimination.

If your hero wins our campaign,  they can join our Soweto Tour, also known as "Africa's New York." Explore the city where Mandela once lived and Mahatma Gandhi began his legal career.

Hear about two of the twentieth century's most famous freedom heroes in the city where their legal and political careers began. Follow in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and his Satyagraha (Passive Resistance) Movement, as well as Nelson Mandela and his Defiance Campaign.  Walk along Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world in which two Nobel Prize winners have lived.

But have you heard about one of the new kids on the block - Sanctuary Mandela?  This homestead is surrounded by lush gardens and retreat areas filled with perfectly-curated exhibits that pay tribute to our human rights activist, former ideal president, and global icon Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. This is done to honour Madiba's depth of character and contemplative spirit. Every area of the boutique hotel is designed to offer a unique blend of peace, history, and mindful experiences. In the Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, where Nelson Mandela spent most of his time after leaving Robben Island, Sanctuary Mandela depicts parts of the mansion where Madiba entertained celebrities like Michael Jackson and Oprah Winfrey and later established the headquarters of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.   Sanctuary Mandela has been reimagined as a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel with 9 tailored rooms and retreat areas for introspection, healing, and thought-provoking experiences inspired by Nelson Mandela's life and times.

Are you ready to pay it forward?  The platform is open, so here is your chance to nominate that special buddy who deserves a gift, the family down the street who hasn't had a vacation in years, or the health care professional who worked diligently during COVID to keep us all safe. Please tell us who they are and why you believe they are deserved.  By nominating your hero, they stand a chance to win a set of tickets to hop on the Red Bus. Nominations close at 18h00 on 18 July and the winning 20 nominees will be announced on 31 July 2022.
