Join the Twitter blanket drive campaign 2016

25 April 2016

Winter is fast approaching which means the Twitter blanket drive campaign #TBD2016 is back to help collect blankets to keep South Africans warm this winter.

The Twitter blanket drive was started seven years ago with a single tweet by the founder Melanie Minnaar, as she contemplated the cold winter ahead. She tweeted: “What if each person on Twitter donated a blanket?” Since then the campaign has gone national and international with Zimbabwe, Namibia and Australia joining the effort.

"At City Sightseeing we work closely with disadvantaged communities so we know only too well how a warm blanket will go a long way this winter," says sales and marketing manager Mandi Jarman.

She adds, "This is why we have decided to become part of the campaign by using stop 5 at 81 Long Street as our collection point. If you want to donate a blanket all you have to do is use our stop as a drop-off point and we will make sure the blankets reach those who need them most. You can drop off your blankets from now until 25 May 2016."

Stop no 25 in Groot Constantia is also getting involved this year by offering free wine tasting in exchange for a blanket on Saturday, 21 May from 9am to 4.30pm.

This year the blankets collected will be donated to Operation Shoebox and Cape Town Child Welfare.

Other drop-off locations include:

  • The Cape Town Office on Roeland Street
  • The Cape Town garage at the Woodstock Exchange
  • A+ Computer Training Studios at 5 St George’s Mall
  • Love Pilates studio in Durbanville
  • The Groot Constantia wine farm
  • #Jaxshop101 at VOICES CLUB
  • Top Gym in Grassy Park [28 May ONLY]

The blankets will be handed over to the beneficiaries at the Fire & Ice Hotel in New Church Street, Cape Town, on Thursday 26 May from 6pm to 9.30pm.
