City Sightseeing offers you an opportunity to explore the city on foot in two different tours – and they're free.
Both these free Johannesburg walking tours, in conjunction with Nielsen Tours, start and end at Park Station, where you'll meet your guide before venturing out. Although Park Station is not an official City Sightseeing stop, ticket holders have the opportunity to hop off and on there to join the walking tour. Park Station lies just after Constitution Hill (stop 5) on our Red City Tour.
What to wear and bring: Wear your comfiest pair of shoes and make sure your camera or phone is fully charged to capture the charm of Joburg.
Historical City Centre Tour
The Historical City Centre Tour takes you through the city's busy streets where you'll come across landmarks like the Church Street food market, Rissik Street post office, the old city hall, Johannesburg City Library and Chancellor House, where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo opened the country’s first black law practice in the 1950s.
Along the way, you'll learn about the colourful history of Joburg – from being a mining town to becoming one of the world’s 50 largest metropoles.
Departure times: 10.30am and 1pm, 365 days a year

In Braamfontein you'll get a taste of the rich selection of street art in the area and find out how it has turned into a trendy hub – with cafes, restaurants, a food market and a growing nightlife scene – over the past ten years. Our guides will share some of the history with you, including how 56 tons of dynamite meant for the gold mines once turned a major part of the area into a big crater.
