#AskTheRedBusSA: the ins and outs of our Soweto tour

09 February 2017

Tourists and locals love our extension tour to the township of Soweto, but often have questions about departure times, costs and more. Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions:

Which ticket must I buy to go on the tour to Soweto?

The Red City Tour and Soweto Combo ticket. With this ticket, you'll also be able to go on the Green Tour, but you'll have to switch over to the Red City Tour at Constitution Hill.

Where does the Soweto tour start and at what time does it depart?

There are five two-hour tours from the Apartheid Museum (stop 13 on the Red City Tour) to Soweto and back every day. Departure times are 11.15am, 12.15pm, 1.15pm, 2.15pm and 3.15pm. Have a look at the timetable to make sure you don't miss the shuttle.

Which attractions will I see on the Soweto tour?

Our red shuttle to Soweto will take you past FNB Stadium (known as Soccer City during the 2010 FIFA World Cup), Diepkloof, the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Bara Taxi Rank, Orlando Towers, Orlando Stadium, the Hector Pieterson Memorial (you'll hop off here for a short tour), Vilakazi Street (you'll hop off here for a quick walk), and the Kliptown Open Air Museum at Walter Sisulu Square.

Does the Soweto tour also work on a hop-on, hop-off basis?

No, but if you depart on one of the early tours (11.15am, 12.15pm or 1.15pm), you can opt to stay behind at the Hector Pieterson Museum, have lunch in Vilakazi Street or bungee jump at the Orlando Towers, and catch a later shuttle back to the Apartheid Museum. Ask your tour guide about these options as soon as you hop on.

Please note that the Orlando Towers are only open from Thursday to Sunday. Make sure that you catch the 11.15am, 12.15pm or 1.15pm Soweto tour from the Apartheid Museum to allow enough time to hop off at the towers. Although they don't take bookings, we recommend that you phone the bungee operators on +27 (0)71 674 4343 in advance to inform them that you will be hopping off the red Soweto shuttle to do the jump. The last shuttle from the towers back to the Apartheid Museum departs around 3pm.

Are the Red City Tour and Soweto Combo tickets only valid for one day?

We have one-day and two-day tickets available. Two-day tickets are valid for two consecutive days. To make the most of your red bus experience and allow yourself enough time to hop on the Green Tour, the Red City Tour and the extension tour to Soweto, and explore the stops along the way, we recommend buying a two-day ticket.
