Cape Town stop of the month: 81 Long Street

Immerse yourself in South Africa's cultural heritage with one of our listed ideas

As our biggest and busiest tour office, 81 Long Street is a hive of activity – and the perfect spot to start your Heritage Day celebrations this Thursday.

Located in the heart of the CBD, and just a stone’s throw from Greenmarket Square, stop 5 of our Red City Tour and Blue Mini Peninsula Tour is home to many other red bus offerings that showcase South Africa’s heritage.

Here are five ideas on how to celebrate our proudly South African culture and diversity:

Hop on a bus

There is something special about seeing the city from the top of a double-decker red bus – even for locals. And, by listening to our commentary, you’ll learn a thing or two about Cape Town and its rich heritage.

The Yellow Downtown Tour

We recommend doing the Yellow Downtown Tour which departs from 81 Long Street. This tour features seven stops, centred around the city’s historic landmarks and museums. Have a look at the Iziko Museums’ “in_herit festival” here.

Free walking tours

Our free walking tours, which depart from stop 5, offer great on-the-ground experiences. Together with your guide, weave in and out of the streets of the CBD with the Historic City Walk, or venture up to the cobbled roads of the Bo-Kaap.

LaGuGu Township Tour

Explore the city’s original and oldest township, Langa , with a free hour-long walking tour and bicycle ride. Hop off at Mzoli’s, in neighbouring Gugulethu, for a meal. This township tour is a unique and unforgettable experience.

Cape Town Fringe Festival

This annual arts festival is held at several venues across the CBD, the V&A Waterfront and Langa. Hop on a red bus and hop off at one of the stops closest to the venues to enjoy over 70 acts – from drama to comedy and music. The festival runs from Thursday, 24 September to Sunday, 4 October. Find out more here.

Whether you immerse yourself in South Africa’s cultural heritage on Thursday or simply enjoy a braai (Heritage Day is widely marked with our favourite outdoor activity), it’s a great day to celebrate all things South African.
