What's new in Cape Town?

  • 04 June 2017 | By Libby Peacock

The Mother City continues to grow, evolve and excite – and there are always fresh additions to the scene. Here are some of our favourite new spots and services.

Eat, drink and be merry

Mouille Point has metamorphosed into one of Cape Town’s coolest places to be seen, and one of the newest spots on its “golden mile” is the stylish Lily’s restaurant, offering everything from coffee, breakfast (quirky categories include “Be lavish” and “Be lean”) to beautifully presented lunches and dinners.

After a fancy burger? “The Titanic” comes with iceberg lettuce, a beef patty, spicy aioli, smoked Gouda cheese, salsa, house pickles and coleslaw. Main courses such as the “Crispy Quack” confit duck leg or “Just Keep Slimming” grilled hake cater for every appetite and sensibility. With yummy Buddha bowls, coconut curries and other meat-free dishes on offer, vegetarians will leave happy, too.

It’s elegant, contemporary, a hop and a skip from the beach – and there are cocktails too!

Lily’s is conveniently positioned near stop 12 on City Sightseeing’s Mini Peninsula or Cape Town City Tours, from where the restaurant is just a short walk.

Where to find it: Corner of Beach Rd and Surrey Place, Mouille Point; tel: +27 (0)21 204 8545, email: info@lilysrestaurant.co.za.

To the market

Cape Town’s brand-new Mojo Market on Regent Road, Sea Point, is a vast indoor space with views, boasting designer stores, fresh goods, fabulous food – and, in keeping with the mood, a classy coffee collective showcasing the Mother City’s top artisanal roasters.

Described as an “urban street market” with an industrial-chic design, the market offers everything from clothing and gifts to homeware and jewellery. More than 25 food stalls on the premises ensure that foodies are thoroughly spoilt for choice.

Free weekend music performances – from jazz and acoustic guitar to pop and folk – started on 1 June 2017. See Mojo Market’s Facebook page for full line-ups and other cool offerings.

The best way to see the market is by hopping off the City Sightseeing red bus at stop 10 (situated at the corner of Beach and St John’s Roads) on its Mini Peninsula or Cape Town City Tours – simply hop back on once you’ve enjoyed all the market has to offer.

Where to find it: 30 Regent Road, Sea Point; email: manager@mojomarket.co.za.

Let your hair down

What’s a cool, classy and cosmopolitan city without a deliciously flamboyant cabaret-and-dinner venue? The new Gate69 on the Mother City’s hip and happening Bree Street is the brainchild of actor and cabaret star Brendan van Rhyn – also known as the outrageously fun burlesque performer Cathy Specific – and two partners.

Tickets for regular shows and monthly First Thursdays events are R550, including easy-to-eat “designer-mezze” dinners and dessert, and there’s a standalone bar downstairs that’s open from Wednesdays to Saturdays. You can also hire the venue for small corporate functions, launches or private parties.

Where to find it: 87 Bree Street, Cape Town; tel: +27 (0)21 035 1627 or +27 (0)71 589 2915; email: info@gate69.co.za.
