First Thursdays treat at Cape Town’s Travel Depot

  • 05 June 2017 | Alyx Carolus

A monthly city-wide cultural experience focusing on food, art and creativity, First Thursdays is a regular fixture on the bustling Cape Town nightlife scene.

This month, one of the Travel Depot’s vendors hosted an incredible headwrapping workshop for visitors. Amiti design collective put together the event because their beautiful Yisaka wax-print scarves have become a firm favourite with locals and tourists alike.

Founded by photographer and designer Michelle Oberholzer, the Yisaka brand name derives its origins from the Zulu word isaka, meaning sack. Michelle also designs wax-print shift dresses.

She explains, “Yisaka is quite a lifestyle brand for me.” She started wearing headscarves when she returned to Cape Town after living in London and would ask people to teach her how to wrap them properly. She has since become passionate about this African artform.

Michelle demonstrated three different headwrap styles, using her own scarves. The participants all got to wrap scarves under her careful guidance.
