Breakwater Prison

Breakwater Prison was originally constructed in 1860 to house convicts working on the breakwater. The building now houses a graduate school and hotel.

Chavonnes Cannon Battery Museum

Originally built in 1714 by the Dutch East India Company as an extra measure of protection for the Cape.

Located next to the Clock Tower and to many an onlooker’s delight, the Old Swing Bridge is still used today allowing thoroughfare to larger ships arriving and leaving the dock.

The Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island

Originally an embarkation building for Robben Island prisoners used at the time of the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela. Today it is a museum featuring the history of Robben Island and honouring those who fought against apartheid.

The Time Ball Tower

A signalling device built in 1894 whereby ship's masters were able to test the accuracy of their chronometers whilst docked.

Watch seals at the Seal Landing

See a colony of Cape fur seals resting on the seal landing in the Clock Tower Precinct. They are an integral part of harbour life and Capetonians are fortunate enough to have these seals living in such close proximity.
