Outstanding October Greetings
Guten Tag!
That's how you say "Good Day" in German. With summer on the way it's a good time to start learning how to greet all the visitors that will be coming to enjoy the beautiful Mother City. Did you know that on October 1st 1908 the first Model-T Ford went on sale, that's 103 years ago? Luckily our Red Buses are a lot more comfortable than those first cars, with on board commentary from our friends, Blatjan Baboon, Mandisa the Mongoose, Salty Seagull and Abie. |

Stop of the Month: Sea Point - Stop 16
|

|
Sea Point is a suburb on the Atlantic seaboard with a fascinating natural phenomenon. Our bus stops on the corner of Beach and St. Johns road. Take a walk along the promenade and look out for the coastal rocks which have striking striped colouring first noted by Charles Darwin in 1884.
This interesting formation was formed millions of years ago, when molten granite pushed up through the ground and mixed with the darker coloured rock known as Malmesbury Group. The intense heat and pressure permanently changed the Cape Town landscape and created the remarkable colours in the rock that you can see today. |

The Black Eagle
The Black Eagle is a bird of prey. They hunt mammals, like the Dassie and birds, like the guinea fowl. Black Eagles hunt in pairs so that one bird can flush prey by skimming the rock face, while the other follows to strike, sharing the meat afterwards. They hunt in the early morning and evenings so as to catch their prey unawares. Black Eagles lay their eggs from April to July. 1 – 2 eggs are laid and incubated by the female for about 44-48 days, while the male feeds her at the nest.
Chicks are fed by the female with food provided by the male, and can feed themselves at four weeks. The stronger chicks will leave the nest at about 90-98 days old and are chased out of the territory by their parents about four months later. Black Eagles are not threatened globally and there is a remarkably stable population in South Africa. |

Honeycomb Moray Eel
Many people are frightened of eels because of they look and move like snakes. Eels are not snakes – they are actually fish and live in holes or caves. They will defend their cave from intruders and will only venture out briefly to catch passing prey. – I don't know about you but I'm still scared! |
Cape Town Facts

On the Red City Tour you will travel down Darling Street after visiting stop number 10, The Castle of Good Hope. As you drive past the City Hall look to your right and you will see a statue of King - Edward VI. Many people, including locals, do not know why Cape Town has the statue.
Edward was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and was born in 1841.
During the Anglo Boer War he refused to become the King of England until there was peace between Britain and the Boers. It was because of this selfless act, which showed what a great leader he was, that he was honoured with a statue outside the Cape Town City Hall. |
