City Sightseeing Cape Town
valentine's day competition

So, as you all know, our City Sightseeing buses are red...but actually they are really green. No, we haven’t gone colour blind, we are talking about the kind of green that is good for the environment... City Sightseeing has been declared carbon neutral – which means we are not adding to the planets pollution problems AT ALL!

Speaking of red (the colour of love and our buses) – the 14th of February is Valentines Day and this year we are running a Valentines competition where you can win tickets on a special Night Tour bus on February 29th – let mom and dad know about it so they can get their entries in too! Click here to enter.

And, if you’re wondering whether we made a mistake with the date for the competition, we didn’t. 2012 is a leap year, which means that it has an extra day and this day is always at the end of February, the 29th. It’s also the day when girls can ask boys out on a date – so watch out guys!

STOP of the MONTH
World-of-birds
If you are on the Blue Mini Peninsula Tour then be sure to hop off at Bus Stop 21, the World of Birds in Hout Bay, which is Africa’s largest bird sanctuary with thousands and thousands of birds to see!

This really is an amazing place where you can walk through the aviaries (these are huge cages in which the birds live) and watch these feathered friends of all shapes, sizes and colours in their natural habitats.
For more info visit www.worldofbirds.org.za or call 021 790 2730.

Highlights of World of Birds:
See indigenous and exotic birds, including ostriches, cormorants, pelicans, penguins, parrots, eagles and many other kinds of birds.
Observe the birds going about as they would in the wild – building nests, laying eggs, feeding their chicks – all right before your eyes.

Learn what else the World of Birds sanctuary does for these birds and animals – World of Birds is also a hospital, orphanage and breeding centre, caring for injured birds and animals, and breeding threatened species behind-the-scenes.
SPOTTED at the AQUARIUM
V&A Aquarium stop1, Box jellyfish
What kind of fish goes best with a Peanut butter sandwich? A Jellyfish!
Box Jellyfish are one of the most beautiful creatures at the Two Oceans Aquarium if you ask us! These amazing animals are found off the west coast of South Africa and are related to the deadly sea wasps found off the coast of Australia. Although not as venomous as sea wasps, box jellies can give a very painful sting!

These jellies have strong tentacles that have thousands of stinging cells called “nematocysts”. These cells are used to stun and kill prey, which is then pulled into the mouth by the jelly’s tentacles. The Two Oceans Aquarium is situated at Bus Stop 1.
SPOTTED on TABLE MOUNTAIN
Ghost Frog on Table Mountain!
Did you know that there is a type of frog found ONLY on Table Mountain? Cool hey? Table Mountain really does keep wowing us!

Table Mountain Ghost frogs are pale green with purple and reddish-brown blotches and they are really fantastic swimmers but not such good jumpers. These cool frogs have adapted to living in mountain streams, but some have even been spotted living in caves or hiding in cracks in the rocks.

Sadly, the Ghost Frog is listed as critically endangered – which means there are not allot of them left and we have to do everything we can to save them from disappearing forever! Things like fires and a poisonous disease called chytridiomycosis (say that fast six time!) are killing the Ghost Frogs.

Thankfully, Western Cape Nature Conservation is doing its best to save these special frogs!
FACTS about Cape Town
Squirrel
Did you know that the lively little grey squirrels that run around the Company's Garden are not originally from South Africa but actually come from North America? They were introduced to Cape Town in the 1890's (over 100 years ago) by Cape Premier Cecil Rhodes who brought a few with him when he came here – probably because they reminded him of home!

Squirrels have babies twice a year so the grey squirrel population grew quickly and now you find these cute little guys all over the place!
For a fun activity visit the Company’s Garden and get mom and dad to buy a bag of nuts to feed the squirrels. They are really tame and will take the food from your hands – but watch out – they are still wild animals and can give you a nasty bite so treat them with respect.
FACTS about the Red Bus
facts about red bus
The bus in the picture is one of two that we use during our busy times to help with the load.

These are very special buses to us because they are two of the first buses that started City Sightseeing and they are still going strong! They are so old that they don’t even have power steering - so the driver needs to make sure he ate his breakfast and is feeling strong! They also still have the old split rim with tyre and tube.

These grand old buses can take 80 passengers each. At City Sightseeing we don’t call our buses “she”.

Where do I take Mom & Dad?
Cape Town is never a dull place but it has an amazing array of events on during summer. We’ll keep you updated on all of them.
