FACTS ABOUT CAPE TOWN
dam wall
The Golden Acre, a shopping centre in the heart of Cape Town, contains the oldest remaining structure in South Africa – part of a dam wall – the first proper dam in South Africa. It was built by Zacharias Wagenaer on Table Mountain’s Fresh River in 1663. The original water-line, prior to the land being reclaimed from the sea, can be viewed on the floor of the Golden Acre.
