Table Mountain: The Cape's Famous Icon

Hop on the Red City Tour bus and City Sightseeing will bring you directly to Table Mountain’s Cable Car and meet you on your descent again. Enjoy the sights, sounds and fresh air that this unforgettable Cape Town experience has to offer.

› Set foot on the Mother City’s famous icon and main tourist attraction
› Enjoy the convenience of the upgraded cable cars
› See why Table Mountain should be on the top of everyone’s Cape Town holiday itinerary

Table Mountain has always had a power of magnetism and mystery behind it for being the flattest mountain in the world. However, the way to the top of this Cape Town mountain was never easy, and for many centuries only a handful of bold and determined people could say that they had climbed it. By 1912, with a strong desire to gain easy access to the top of Table Mountain, the Cape Town City Council commissioned an engineer to investigate the various options for public transport to the top.

On 4 October 1929 the Cableway opened its doors to its first 200 visitors. Since Then, three upgrades have taken place, with the most recent in October of1997.

The Cableway Today

› Let the Table Mountain Cableway take you to the summit of Table Mountain in under 10 minutes
› Enjoy spectacular 360-degree views of the Cape Peninsula during your trip up and down the mountain
› Join 19 million others who have already undertaken this special Table Mountain travel

A trip to Cape Town is not complete without going up Table Mountain and the cable car is still the quickest and easiest way of doing so. The two cable cars hold around 65 people each and actually revolve around inside so no matter what you begin facing you will receive a full panoramic view of the area before you reach the top.

The top station stands on the Western end of the mountain affording visitors magnificent views over the city, Robben Island out to sea, Camps Bay, the rest of the mountain and the Twelve Apostles. There is an abundance of photo opportunities, a restaurant open throughout the day and a souvenir shop.

Table Mountain Nature

› Take a casual walk on or around Table Mountain
› See fynbos, an indigenous plant of South Africa
› Spot a variety of animals, some of which can only survive on the ecosystem of the mountain

Choose between the Dassie Walk or the Klipspringer Walk or spend the better part of a day hiking all the way along the top of the mountain and down to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, one of the world’s largest and most beautiful botanical gardens.

Table Mountain is home to about 2000 species of plants, most of them being fynbos, which only grows in Southern Africa.

You’ll be amazed by the many species of animals on Table Mountain. The most frequently visible of them, being the dassie. But if you are fortunate enough you’ll also spot porcupines, grysbok, mongooses, snakes and tortoises.

Or choose from a range of other activities like a Table Mountain Hike or if you’re the more adventurous type, you can even try to Abseil Table Mountain.
