City Sightseeing red buses leave from Park Station every 40 minutes and undertake a 90-minute circular route with 11 other stops before returning to Park Station. Best is that Park Station is linked to OR Tambo International Airport by Gautrain – a world-class high-speed rail service. So if you have a few hours to spend at the airport in between flights, why not hop on to the Gautrain to Park Station and then take the City Sightseeing bus for a journey around Johannesburg?

It is simple. Walk to the Gautrain station at OR Tambo International Airport and buy a Gautrain Gold Card from one of the vending machines. Load around R300 onto your card as this should be sufficient to take you all the way to Park Station and back to the airport. Once on the train, get out at the Sandton Station and walk across to the next platform to catch the train to Park Station (via Rosebank). Once you alight at Park Station walk through the turnstiles and turn right, go up the escalators and the City Sightseeing bus-stop will be behind you (to the right) as you come up the escalators.
To make your journey as smooth as possible, why not book your City Sightseeing trip online. For information on Gautrain departure times download its free app or visit www.gautrain.co.za.

Park Station straddles the railway lines running east-west through the city. It is a massive complex from where you can catch metro trains to the far reaches of the city, or long-distance trains to Cape Town and other South African cities. Also part of the station is the city’s main long-distance bus terminus and from here you can travel to almost anywhere in South Africa and beyond to African countries.

Braamfontein is just on your doorstep. It is an easy walk down Wolmarans Street (western direction) and up Melle. But the 11th stop on this City Sightseeing route is at The Grove in the middle of Braamfontein so you may want to postpone exploring this trendy part of town until then.

However, a walk up Rissik Street past the monolithic municipal offices on the hill will bring you to the Joburg Theatre and neighbouring South African Ballet Theatre. Check the websites for performances on at the time of your visit. A lovely secret of Jozi is the tiny Ballet Theatre Square between the two theatres. From here you can watch ballet dancers going through their paces through the glass facade of the theatre. In front of the Joburg Theatre is a delightful park, where you can enjoy a picnic in the sun.
